FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
The things people usually wonder about before handing over their taxes. If yours isn’t here, ask us.
Working virtually
How does virtual tax preparation work?
You send an inquiry, get onboarding instructions, upload your documents to our secure client portal, review your completed return with us, and sign your e-file authorization electronically. No office visits needed.
Do I need to live in a certain state?
No. We work with clients online across the U.S. We prepare federal returns and state returns for any state you need.
Will I ever talk to a real person?
Yes. You’ll work directly with your preparer, not a call center. Phone or video calls can be scheduled when it’s easier to talk something through.
Documents & security
What documents will I need?
It depends on your situation. Most people need a photo ID, last year’s return, and their income forms (W-2s, 1099s). Business owners also need income and expense records. The How It Works page has a general list, and we’ll let you know if anything is missing.
How do I send documents securely?
Only through the secure client portal. It’s encrypted and built for exactly this.
Please don’t email or text tax documents, and never put Social Security numbers, account numbers, or tax forms into the website contact form.
Why can’t I just email my documents?
Regular email isn’t a safe place for Social Security numbers and financial details. Using the portal protects you from your information sitting in inboxes where it could be exposed.
What do you do to protect my information?
We follow a written information security plan, use a secure portal for all documents, and limit access to client files. You can read more in our Privacy Policy.
Fees & timelines
How much does tax preparation cost?
Every return has a starting fee, which we’ll share when you inquire. Your final fee depends on the forms and schedules your return ends up needing, so it’s confirmed once your return is complete. You’ll see it during your review, before you sign or anything is filed.
Why can’t you tell me the exact fee up front?
Because it depends on what turns up in your documents: a 1099 you forgot about, a home sale, a pile of business expenses. We’d rather give you an honest starting point than a guess that changes later.
How long will my return take?
Most returns are ready for review within about a week of receiving complete documents. Timing can stretch closer to the April deadline, so earlier is always better.
What if I’m running out of time before the deadline?
Reach out as soon as you can. If your return can’t be finished in time, an extension gives you more time to file (not more time to pay). We’ll walk you through it.
Can you guarantee my refund?
No one honestly can. Your refund or balance due is based on your real tax situation. What we can promise is a careful return that claims what you’re entitled to.
Returning clients & communication
I worked with you last year. How do I get started again?
Welcome back. Log in to the client portal and upload this year’s documents. We’ll let you know if anything looks different from last year.
How will you contact me?
By email, text, or a scheduled phone or video call, whichever works best for you. Documents and sensitive details only go through the secure portal, never by email or text.
How quickly will you respond?
We aim to reply within 1 business day. During peak season it may take a little longer, and we’ll keep you posted.
Can I ask questions outside of tax season?
Yes. Clients can reach out year-round, whether it’s an IRS letter, a question about estimated payments, or a life change that affects next year’s taxes.
